Troubleshooting

What do I do if videos are repeatedly highlighted in the wrong color?

Whilst CollorTube is highly accurate - YouTube is a complex website that doesn't function like traditional websites. When browsing YouTube, the page doesn't fully reload when you navigate between different parts of the site. Instead, YouTube reuses parts of the page to make navigation faster.

On YouTube, videos sometimes load faster than the information about how old they are. This can cause CollorTube to occasionally highlight a video to behave in unexpected ways such as temporarily showing the wrong highlight color when a page first loads.

These issues are most commonly seen on YouTube's homepage (youtube.com), as this is the page users visit most frequently and sometimes too quickly over and over to let Youtube home page reload properly.

Other pages like playlists, search results, and channel pages typically work more reliably.

How to fix:

1. Refresh the page - that usually gives the extension enough time again to load properly on Youtube.
2. Clear your browser cache:
In Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data
Select Cached images and files and click Clear data
3. Restart the extension and click Save to activate the highlighting again - refresh your page after clicking Save.
4. Lastly, remove CollorTube from your extensions and reinstall it again. (Follow the reset instructions to log in again with your license key via the Unlock button you first see when you open the extension for the first time.)

What's happening behind the scenes?

When the extension highlights videos on YouTube, it needs to work alongside YouTube's own loading process:

Our extension adds color highlights to videos based on their age
When you navigate around YouTube, parts of the page are reused rather than completely reloaded

These reused elements might keep their old highlight colors from a previous video and can cause videos to temporarily display incorrect highlighting.

How we've approach this issue

Our extension now automatically clears any previous highlighting before applying new colors. This helps ensure that all videos get the correct highlighting color based on the current settings.

For the best highlighting experience:

Allow a moment for the page to fully load before looking at the highlighting colors
If you notice incorrect highlighting, a simple page refresh usually fixes the issue
Avoid rapidly clicking back and forth between YouTube pages as this can sometimes cause highlighting inconsistencies
If you've just changed your highlighting settings, you might need to reload open YouTube tabs to see the changes.

Remember that the YouTube homepage is most susceptible to these issues, while other pages tend to work more consistently
